28.09.2020 – L.dK Weekly

LANA DEL REY’S NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL! BECOMES BESTSELLING ALBUM OF ALL TIME!

Note: This music chart reflects my personal music consumption. 1 song played = 1,000 units.

As NFR! reaches new sales heights, Taylor Swift’s folklore becomes the longest-running number one hit of 2020 and Carole King rewrites the record for most weeks spent at No.2!

Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! cements its place in this history books as it becomes the bestselling album of all time, with total sales of 3,263,000 copies since its release in August 2019. The juggernaut set backtracks 3-5 this week moving 32,000 units (down 11 percent).

NFR! outshines Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born to become the biggest selling record ever released, with the latter having moved 3,248,000 units to date. Star had ranked as the bestselling record in chart history since March 2019, and earlier this year it became the first album to sell 3 million copies.

Adding to the gravity of this achievement: this marks the second time that Lana Del Rey has claimed the title of bestselling album of all time. Her 2017 effort Lust for Life earned the accolade soon after its July release, becoming the first album to sell over 1 million & 2 million units respectively (it has sold 2,485,000 in total) and remaining unchallenged until being dethroned by Star in March 2019.

The three records above remain the only three to sell more than 2 million copies, and have all ranked as the bestselling album ever since their release. The timeline of bestselling album of all time is as follows:

  • Album , Artist – Sales when title claimed (date)
  • Tango in the Night , Fleetwood Mac – 87,000 (March 2017)
  • The Other Side of the Mirror , Stevie Nicks – 310,000 (April 2017)
  • Rumours , Fleetwood Mac – 801,000 (July 2017)
  • Lust for Life , Lana Del Rey – 1,016,000 (September 2017)
  • A Star is Born , Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 2,220,000 (March 2019)
  • Norman Fucking Rockwell! , Lana Del Rey – 3,263,000 (September 2020)

Finally, on NFR!: The album logs a record-padding 35th week in the Top Five, and 55th week in the Top Ten.

2020’s Longest-Running Number One: Taylor Swift’s folklore stays lodged at the apex for a ninth successive week, shifting 116,000 copies (down 16 percent) and becoming the longest-running number one album of 2020 so far! It passes Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia which ruled for eight straight weeks earlier in the year. folklore is currently the fourth longest-running number one album ever:

  1. Norman Fucking Rockwell! , Lana Del Rey – 17 weeks
  2. A Star is Born , Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 12 weeks
  3. Lust for Life , Lana Del Rey – 11 weeks
  4. foklore , Taylor Swift – 9 weeks
  5. Future Nostalgia , Dua Lipa – 8 weeks

Swift’s smash also goes 4 x Platinum this week, denoting sales of over 1.2 million copies. It has moved 1.268 million to date.

Another record-breaker on the chart… Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection repeats at No.2 (46,000 – down 8 percent) for a record ninth cumulative week. The compilation passes Alanis Morissette’s The Collection (8 weeks) for the longest stay at No.2 without ever reaching the No.1 spot. Morissette’s Collection keeps at No.4 this week (33,000 – down 5 percent).

Returning to its peak, Lana Del Rey is up 5-3 with her spoken word poetry collection Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass earning 33,000 units (down 5 percent), as the album becomes the singer’s fourth to be certified Platinum (300,000).

Two chart mainstays follow in the Top Ten: Stevie Nicks’ compilation Timespace: the Best of Stevie Nicks roars 10-6 with 25,000 units (up 31 percent), just ahead of Kate Bush’s The Whole Story: up 11-7 with 24,000 sold (up 41 percent).

Troye Sivan’s In a Dream slides 6-8 after peaking at No.2 (23,000 – down 11 percent); Harry Styles dips 8-9 with his former number one Fine Line (21,000 – down 4 percent); and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia retreats 9-10 (20,000 – on par).

Industry Sales: Total music sales dipped by 2.2 percent this week to 661,000 sold across all albums.

Onto Next Week: Taylor Swift’s folklore should have a clear path to a tenth week at No.1, although new albums from Joji & Melanie Martinez may nab a space in the Top Ten!

Notable Moves in the Top 50:

No.13ALICIA / Alicia Keys’ self-titled set enters at No.13 (13,000 sold) after originally being pegged as a Top Ten hopeful.

Swift has now ruled the L.dK Top 50 for a total of ten weeks, making her the fourth artist with the most weeks at No.1. In addition to the eight-week reign of folklore, Swift also sent reputation & Lover to the top spot for one week each.

  4. Taylor Swift – 10 weeks

This week it lifts 28-26 with sales of 7,000 copies. Bella Donna has moved 1.3 million units to date, and as of 2020’s Mid-Year Chart, ranked as one of the year’s Top 40 biggest records.

07.09.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT RULES FOR A SIXTH WEEK WITH FOLKLORE!

AS SWIFT STAYS AT THE SUMMIT, KATY PERRY OPENS AT NO.3.

Taylor Swift’s folklore achieves a sixth successive week at No.1 on the L.dK Top 50, tying Lady Gaga’s Chromatica for the year’s second longest run at the top – both albums trail Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia which ruled for eight consecutive weeks between April and May.

This week, folklore drew 126,000 units, rising 11 percent from the previous week when it moved 113,000 copies. The album, which debuted at No.1 in August with 259,000 first-week sales, has sold 881,000 units to date.

Rising back from No.3 to its No.2 peak is Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection selling 48,000 copies (down 2 percent). The compilation record has now spent a total of six weeks in the Top 50’s runner-up spot: it ties with Ariana Grande’s live release K Bye for Now for the second most weeks at No.2, behind Alanis Morissette’s The Collection which settled there for a total of nine weeks. This week, The Collection slides 4-6 with 39,000 sold (down 9 percent).

Katy Perry pays her first visit to L.dK Weekly as her fifth studio album Smile premieres at No.3 with first week sales of 46,000 copies.

Troye Sivan’s In a Dream EP drops 2-4 in its second week, moving 43,000 units (down 30 percent). Despite missing the No.1 spot last week, Dream is Sivan’s first release to spend multiple weeks inside the Top Five. Following Bloom‘s No.1 debut in September 2018, the LP slid to No.11; it would later re-enter the Top Ten and become one of 2018’s bestselling albums, but would never return to the Top Five.

Rounding out the Top Five: Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass stays at No.5 after hitting No.4 two weeks ago (41,000 – up 5 percent). Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! likewise sits steady at No.8 (27,000 – up 8 percent) as it becomes the first album in history to spend a full year (52 weeks) inside the Top Ten!

As it drops 6-7 (27,000 copies – down 13 percent), Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia surpasses total sales of 1.8 million units. It is just the sixth album to ever achieve this, and interestingly, it is the second to do so this week. More on that later…

Capping the Top Ten this week: Lady Gaga’s Chromatica slides 7-9 (25,000 – down 3 percent) and Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor falls 9-10 (20,000 – down 9 percent).

Industry Sales: Total music sales this week swelled by 6.1 percent to 774,000 units overall.

Onto Next Week: The path looks clear enough for Taylor Swift’s folklore to earn its seventh week at Number One, likely with over 100,000 in sales yet again. The only new arrival: Declan McKenna’s Zeros could debut inside the Top Ten with roughly 30,000 sold.

Notable Moves in the Top 50

No.11 – BADLANDS: Live at Webster Hall / Halsey scores her fourth Top 20 hit on the L.dK Top 50 as Webster Hall opens at No.11 with 19,000 copies sold. The live set follows Top Five hits BADLANDS (No.4) & Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (No.2), and Manic which became her first Number One hit earlier this year.

No.18 – Ungodly Hour / The sophomore studio album from sister-duo Chloe x Halle entered the Top 50 at No.5 in June, and has sold steadily since its release, having spent its entire chart run inside the Top 20. This week, Ungodly sinks 16-18 (13,000 units) and becomes the pair’s first project to be certified Platinum for sales of over 300,000 copies.

No.19 – True Colors / Cyndi Lauper’s 1986 sophomore LP was a Top Five hit in July this year, but was unable to replicate the massive success of her 1983 debut set She’s so Unusual. Colors drops 17-19 this week with 12,000 sold, bringing its total sales figure to 304,000 units. It is Lauper’s second Platinum-certified hit, with the aforementioned Unusual having shifted in excess of 1.5 million units to date.

No.22 – Diva / Annie Lennox stays put at No.22 with her solo debut record (moving 10,000) in its 83rd week on the tally. The smash hit has now sold 1,801,000 units since its release, and has become the sixth album to be certified 8 x Platinum! Diva’s prestigious company is as follows:

  1. A Star is Born , Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 3,223,000 (Diamond)
  2. Norman Fucking Rockwell! , Lana Del Rey – 3,165,000 (Diamond)
  3. Lust for Life , Lana Del Rey – 2,484,000 (8 x Platinum)
  4. Love + Fear , MARINA – 1,866,000 (6 x Platinum)
  5. Future Nostalgia , Dua Lipa – 1,814,000 (6 x Platinum)
  6. Diva , Annie Lennox – 1,801,000 (6 x Platinum)

No.30 – Club Future Nostalgia / Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia has certainly made a name for itself this year, becoming the fastest-selling record of 2020 upon its release (a record since broken), staying at No.1 for eight weeks (the longest run of the year to date), and moving more copies than any other album since the start of 2020 (1.814 million)! So, it’s odd to see it’s remix record Club Future Nostalgia limp onto the Top 50 at No.30 with just 6,000 sold in its first week. The original Nostalgia is still present in this week’s Top Ten.

31.08.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT FENDS OFF TROYE SIVAN TO EARN A FIFTH STRAIGHT WEEK AT NUMBER ONE!

SWIFT’S FOLKLORE LEADS FOR A FIFTH FRAME, AS SIVAN SETTLES FOR A NO.2 STAR WITH IN A DREAM.

Taylor Swift’s folklore achieves a fifth consecutive week at No.1 on L.dK Weekly, becoming the third album of 2020 to lead for as long.

folklore shifted 113,000 copies in the most recent tracking week, dropping by 15 percent from the previous week.

The album debuted at No.1 back in August with first week sales of 259,000 copies, and has stayed at the summit ever since, selling more than 100,000 copies in each term.

Currently, folklore is the third longest-running number one album of 2020, and is the second to spend five consecutive weeks at the top of the list; Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia ruled for eight straight weeks between April and May, and Lady Gaga’s Chromatica spent a total of six non-consecutive weeks at No.1 between June and July.

Opening at No.2 on this week’s L.dK Top 50 is Troye Sivan’s brand-new EP In a Dream, earning 62,000 copies in its first seven days. It grants Sivan his second Top Five hit, following Bloom which debuted at No.1 in September 2018 with 126,000 sold. That album has since been certified Platinum (300,000) – with 572,000 sold – and this time around it bounces 42-21, shifting 10,000 units in its 49th week on the chart. Bloom is the longest-charting album of all time by a solo male artist!

Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection sinks 2-3 after five weeks in second place moving 49,000 copies (down 4 percent).

Alanis Morissette’s The Collection becomes the 14th record ever to be certified 5 x Platinum denoting sales of 1,500,000 units, having sold 1.52 million since its release: this week the compilation disc falls 3-4 (it topped out at No.2 for a record nine weeks) with 43,000 sold (down 10 percent).

2020’s Third 5 x Platinum Album: For the first time ever, three albums have sold more than 1.5 million copies in a single year.

  1. Future Nostalgia , Dua Lipa – 1,787,000
  2. Chromatica , Lady Gaga – 1,549,000
  3. The Collection , Alanis Morissette – 1,520,000

In 2019, albums achieved this feat, Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! moved a record 1,886,000 copies followed by MARINA’S Love + Fear on 1,791,000 sold. Meanwhile in both 2018 and 2017 just one LP managed in each year, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born sold 1,570,000 in 2018 and Lana Del Rey’s Lust for Life recorded sales of 1,866,000 in 2017.

9th Longest-Running Top Five Album:

Morissette’s The Collection has remained in the Top Five for 18 non-consecutive weeks, marking the 9th longest stay in the region’s history. It passes MARINA’S Love + Fear (17 weeks) and now draws even with Annie Lennox’s Medusa & Ariana Grande’s Sweetener (both on 18 weeks).

  1. Norman Fucking Rockwell! / Lana Del Rey – 33 weeks
  2. A Star is Born , Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 31 weeks
  3. Lust for Life , Lana Del Rey – 28 weeks
  4. Rumours , Fleetwood Mac – 26 weeks
  5. 25 , Adele – 21 weeks
  6. Crystal Visions , Stevie Nicks – 19 weeks
  7. Sweetener , Ariana Grande – 18 weeks
  8. Medusa , Annie Lennox – 18 weeks
  9. The Collection , Alanis Morissette – 18 weeks
  10. Love + Fear , MARINA – 17 weeks

Rounding out the Top Five this week, Lana Del Rey’s Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass retreats 4-5 with 39,000 sold (down 11 percent). Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! simultaneously hops 9-8 on sales of 25,000 copies (up 8 percent), while celebrating an entire year on L.dK Weekly, and logging a record-extending 51st frame inside the Top Ten!

Outside the Top Five, Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia edges 7-6 (31,000 – up 6 percent), Lady Gaga’s Chromatica slides 5-7 (26,000 – down 13 percent), Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor falls 8-9 (22,000 – down 18 percent), and finally Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue plummets 6-10 (20,000 – down 31 percent).

Industry Sales: This week overall music sales dipped by 0.9% to 729,000 albums sold.

Onto Next Week: Three major releases are set to impact L.dK Weekly in the upcoming week. Katy Perry’s Smile could compete for the No.1 spot, possibly with 90,000-100,000 copies, while Dua Lipa’s Club Future Nostalgia and Halsey’s BADLANDS (Live from Webster Hall) could also make the Top Ten!

24.08.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT’S FOLKLORE CELEBRATES A MONTH AT NO.1, BOOSTED BY DELUXE RELEASE!

PLUS: Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is back in the Top Ten!

Tightening her grip on the No.1 spot this week, Taylor Swift earns a fourth term at the summit with folklore. Boosted by the release of a deluxe edition on August 18th, containing new track “the lakes”, folklore moved 134,000 units in the week – up 7 percent against the previous week.

The LP records its greatest sales week to date (aside from its debut week in which it sold 259,000 copies), beating out its second week sales of 131,000 units.

folklore also goes 2 x Platinum just four weeks into its life, having moved 642,000 copies to date. It is Swift’s third album to be certified Multi-Platinum following reputation (2 x Platinum) and Lover (5 x Platinum).

Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection rebounds 3-2 for a fifth week at its peak (51,000 – on par) and crosses the 600,000 sales mark, going 2 x Platinum alongside the afformentioned folklore.

Falling from No.2 to No.3 after a record-extending nine aggregate weeks in second place: Alanis Morissette’s The Collection on sales of 48,000 units (down 7 percent). Lana Del Rey’s spoken word album Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass is steady at its No.4 high (44,000 – down 6 percent) as it goes Gold in its fourth week (100,000 sold).

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica holds steady at No.5 once again shifting 30,000 copies (down 19 percent) as it logs a 12th week inside the Top Five. This week Chromatica becomes just the 13th album to attain 5 x Platinum status on L.dK Weekly – denoting total sales exceeding 1.5 million units.

Even more impressive, is that Chromatica is not Gaga’s first album to cross the 1.5 million mark! Her and Bradley Cooper have sold 3.2 million copies of A Star is Born, making it the bestselling album of all time. Only two other artists can boast two albums in this exclusive club, and are now joined by Gaga:

  • Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell (3.1 million), Lust for Life (2.4 million)
  • Annie Lennox – Diva (1.7 million), Medusa (1.6 million)
  • Lady Gaga – A Star is Born* (3.2 million), Chromatica (1.5 million)

Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue sticks at No.6 (29,000 – down 12 percent) and goes Platinum in its fifth week. Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia rockets 14-7, earning 29,000 copies (up 81 percent) following the release of the remix of “Levitating” featuring Madonna and Missy Elliot.

Rounding out the Top Ten: Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor steps down 7-8 after hitting No.3 (27,000 – down 10 percent), Lana Del Rey’s 17-week No.1 smash Norman Fucking Rockwell! repeats at No.9 (23,000 – down 11 percent) and Alanis Morissette’s Such Pretty Forks in the Road holds at No.10 (18,000 – down 28 percent) following its No.2 debut two weeks ago.

Music Industry: Total music sales took a small hit this week, dipping by roughly 1.1% to 736,000 sold. The industry’s total consumption figure for 2020 to date has now surpassed the entire of 2019, with 26.5 million units versus 26.1 million.

Onto Next Week: Troye Sivan’s 6-track In A Dream EP could easily debut with upwards of 50,000 units, while Taylor Swift’s folklore will likely sell somewhere in the region of 110,000 copies.

Notable Moves in the Top 50

No.39 – Lover / Taylor Swift’s seventh studio album blasted to the top of L.dK Weekly upon its release in August 2019, selling more than 300,000 copies. While it only stayed a week at the top (it was dethroned in its second week by Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! which would hold the crown for the next fourteen weeks) the album lingered in the Top Ten for a hefty 28 weeks and sold more than 1.5 million copies! This week Lover reaches an entire year on L.dK Weekly, dropping 34-39 (5,000) in its 52nd turn on the chart. It is Swift’s first album to do so – her next longest-charting disc is reputation on 18 weeks.

No.48 – Dedicated / It’s a double whammy for Carly Rae Jepsen this week, as her 2019 hit Dedicated wraps a full 52 weeks on the chart (dipping 45-48 – 2,000) and becomes her first project to sell over 1 million copies. Dedicated spent two weeks at No.1 in 2019, and follow-up Dedicated Side B ruled for a week earlier this year (it currently sit as No.30).

17.08.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT STAYS AT NO.1 FOR A THIRD WEEK WITH FOLKLORE!

Plus: Lana Del Rey reaches the Top Five with Violet.

Taylor Swift continues her command of the L.dK Top 50 as folklore stays on top with further sales of 118,000 units (down 10 percent).

folklore extends its record as Swift’s longest-running No.1 album, logging a third frame at the summit. The album has now sold more than 500,000 copies since its release.

Bouncing from No.4 to No.2 this week is Alanis Morissette’s smash hit The Collection: it logs a record-extending ninth week at the runner-up position, moving 52,000 in the most recent tracking week (down 5 percent). It pushes Carole King’s compilation A Beautiful Collection down a spot to No.3 after peaking at No.2 for four weeks. Morissette also places a second album in this week’s top tier: Such Pretty Forks in the Road slides 2-10 following its debut, declining by 67 percent to 25,000 sold. It has now been certified Gold for selling over 100,000 copies.

Lana Del Rey rockets 11-4 with her spoken word album Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass, as it surges by 104 percent to 47,000 copies sold. The spoken word set debuted at No.14 two weeks ago, before then rising to No.11, and this week becomes the first of its kind to enter the Top Five (and Top Ten).

Violet becomes Del Rey’s fifth Top Five album following Born to Die: Paradise Edition (No.2), Lust for Life (No.1 – 11 weeks), The Unreleased Collection (No.3) and Norman Fucking Rockwell! (No.1 – 17 weeks). It’s her seventh to hit the Top Ten overall, joining the aforementioned albums in addition to Ultraviolence (No.8) and Honeymoon (No.6).

Del Rey makes a second appearance in this week’s Top Ten: with Norman Fucking Rockwell! unmoved at No.9 with 26,000 units (down 3 percent).

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica remains at No.5 after six weeks at the pinnacle (37,000 – down 12 percent) as Ellie Goulding’s former one-week No.1 Brightest Blue rebounds 7-6 (33,000 – down 13 percent), swapping places with Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor which peaked at No.3 (30,000 – down 23 percent).

Holding at its No.8 high for a second week is Beyonce’s The Lion King: the Gift (29,000 – down 19 percent), as it goes Silver in its second week (60,000).

Industry Sales: Sliding by 14.9% to 744,000 sold, industry sales have reached their lowest point since the chart dated 23rd March when a total of 673,000 albums were sold across all records, marking the lowest sales figure in almost five months. Despite this, numbers are nearly double last year’s performance in the same week: 374,000 units.

Onto Next Week: Taylor Swift’s folklore looks bound to nab a fourth week at No.1, likely with around 100,000 in sales.

Important Moves in the Top 50

No.40 – Bella Donna / Stevie Nicks’ debut solo album is one of the most successful discs in L.dk chart history: it has been certified 4 x Platinum (1.2 million) and is the 17th bestselling album ever, and until recently was the longest-running Top Ten hit ever with 46 weeks in the region. Bella Donna – which peaked at No.3 in 2017 – has now become the first album to rack up a triple digit tenure on L.dK Weekly, having now spent 100 non-consecutive weeks on the list as it slips 39-40 with 5,000 sold. The set will soon become the first album to spend a total of 2 years (104 weeks) on the tally. In addition, it isn’t Nicks’ only album to live on the list for more than a year, as The Wild Heart (74), Rock a Little (67) and The Other Side of the Mirror (54) have also achieved this!

10.08.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT EARNS HER FIRST MULTI-WEEK LEADER ON L.DK WITH FOLKLORE!

Plus: Alanis Morissette & Beyonce debut in the Top Ten!

For a second consecutive week, Taylor Swift’s folklore proved the most successful album of the moment, shifting 131,000 units in its sophomore frame (down 49 percent).

No.1 for 2 Weeks: As folklore claims a second week at the top spot, it becomes Swift’s first album to achieve a multi-week reign. Her two previous leaders: reputation & Lover both spent a single week at the summit.

Swift’s Third Platinum Record: With total sales of 390,000 units, folklore is the third album from Swift to be certified Platinum (300,000)! The album follows reputation (2 x Platinum) and Lover (5 x Platinum).

Flying onto L.dK Weekly at No.2 this week is Alanis Morissette’s new studio album Such Pretty Forks in the Road, with 77,000 units, derived from 37,000 in first week sales and a further 40,000 pre-sales derived from singles.

Morissette has now nabbed two Top Five albums: Road and her 2005 best-of The Collection, with the latter peaking at No.2 for a record-breaking eight weeks. This week, The Collection slides 3-4 moving 54,000 copies (down 1 percent).

Between Morissette’s two hit albums is Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection, falling 2-3 on sales of 57,000 copies (down 17 percent); and dropping one spot to No.5 is Lady Gaga’s six-week No.1 hit Chromatica with 42,000 sold (down 12 percent).

Just beyond the Top Five, Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor holds steady at No.6 (39,000 – down 13 percent) and Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue descends 5-7 (38,000 – down 19 percent).

Beyonce scores her third Top Ten hit with The Lion King: the Gift opening at No.8 (36,000). It follows Lemonade & Beyonce which both hit No.2 – the former re-enters the list at No.40 this week with 4,000 copies sold.

Capping the Top Ten: Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! logs a record-extending 48th week in the Top Ten as it dips 8-9 (27,000 – down 10 percent); Jessie Ware’s What’s Your Pleasure? dives 7-10 (24,000 – down 33 percent).

Industry: Music sales experienced a 9.8% drop this week, with consumption totalling 875,000 units. Total industry sales for 2020 have now surpassed 25 million.

Onto Next Week: There are no albums scheduled for release this week, meaning Taylor Swift’s folklore is likely to extend its reign: it’s currently aiming to sell around 100,000 copies.

Important Moves in the Top 50!

No.49 – Half Written Story / Hailee Steinfeld’s No.3 peaking EP slides 39-49 in its 13th week with 3,000 sold. The release has now been certified Gold for sales exceeding 100,000 copies.

No.50 – Manic / Halsey’s third studio record led L.dK Weekly for three weeks in January and February this year, but was quick to drop off the chart after its reign. This week the set returns at No.50, earning a 10th term on the ranking – it has sold 482,000 copies to date.

03.08.2020 – L.dK Weekly

TAYLOR SWIFT EARNS THIRD NUMBER ONE AS FOLKLORE OPENS AT NO.1

Note: This chart reflects my own personal music consum

PLUS: Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! adds another record to its roster!

Taylor Swift’s surprise new album – her eighth studio record, and third since the launch of L.dK Weekly in 2017 – unsurprisingly goes straight to No.1 with massive first week sales.

3rd No.1: As folklore bows at the summit, it marks Swift’s third consecutive number one album on L.dK following 2017’s reputation & 2019’s Lover which both spent a week at the top spot. Swift thus becomes just the second female artist, and third act overall, to send three albums all the way to No.1. Among all artists, Stevie Nicks holds the record with five, while Swift ties Fleetwood Mac who also boast three chart-toppers.

  1. Stevie Nicks – The Other Side of the Mirror (5 weeks), Timespace: the Best of Stevie Nicks (3 weeks), Trouble in Shangri-La (1 week), Crystal Visions: the Very Best of Stevie Nicks (3 weeks) and 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault (4 weeks).
  2. Fleetwood Mac – Rumours (5 weeks), Tango in the Night (3 weeks) and Greatest Hits (1 week)
  3. Taylor Swift – reputation (1 week), Lover (1 week) and folklore (1 week*)

Third Biggest Debut of 2020: Shifting a massive 259,000 units in its opening week, folklore nabs the third biggest debut of 2020. It trails just the opening weeks of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica (473,000) and Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (289,000).

7th Fastest-Selling Album of All Time: Swift’s two previous efforts launched with 309,000 (reputation) and 310,000 (Lover). While folklore opens slightly lower, it still establishes Swift as the artist with the most albums which rank in the top ten fastest-selling records of all time!

  1. Lust for Life / Lana Del Rey – 639,000
  2. Chromatica / Lady Gaga – 473,000
  3. Melodrama / Lorde – 345,000
  4. Lover / Taylor Swift – 310,000
  5. reputation / Taylor Swift – 309,000
  6. Future Nostalgia / Dua Lipa – 289,000
  7. folklore / Taylor Swift – 259,000
  8. *Love + Fear / MARINA – 256,000
  9. After Hours / The Weeknd – 249,000
  10. So Good / Zara Larsson – 223,000

Not content to live in the shadow of its new younger sister, Swift’s 2019 No.1 Lover roars 36-13 on this week’s list moving 19,000 copies, and bringing its total sales figures to 1.504 million units. Lover thus becomes Swift’s first release to be certified 5 x Platinum – only ten other albums have achieved this distinction.

Back to the Top Ten: Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection remains at its No.2 peak for a fourth cumulative week selling 69,000 copies (down 17 percent) while Alanis Morissette’s The Collection ups 4-3 after peaking at No.2 for a record eight weeks (55,000 – down 6 percent). Lady Gaga’s Chromatica sinks 3-4 (48,000 – down 38 percent) after a six week reign, holding above Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue which tumbles 1-5 in its second week (47,000 – down 72 percent).

Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor dips 5-6 after hitting No.3 (45,000 – down 27 percent) and goes 2 x Platinum for sales of over 600,000, as Jessie Ware’s former No.1 hit What’s Your Pleasure? steps down 6-7 on sales of 36,000 copies (down 25 percent).

Meanwhile, hopping two spots up to No.8 this week, Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! (which recently joined Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born as one of just two albums to be certified Diamond for selling in excess of 3 million units) moves 30,000 copies (up 7 percent). This week marks the record’s 47th non-consecutive spell in the Top Ten. Rockwell! has spent almost its entire chart run inside the Top Ten, save for one week in July when it ranked at No.13. It thus claims the crown as the longest running Top Ten album ever, stealing the title from Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna which logged a total of 46 weeks in the upper bracket.

  1. Norman Fucking Rockwell! / Lana Del Rey – 47 weeks
  2. Bella Donna / Stevie Nicks – 46 weeks
  3. Rumours / Fleetwood Mac – 45 weeks
  4. A Star is Born / Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 42 weeks
  5. Lust for Life / Lana Del Rey – 39 weeks
  6. Dancing Queen / Cher – 37 weeks
  7. 25 / Adele – 36 weeks
  8. Diva / Annie Lennox – 35 weeks
  9. Back to Black / Amy Winehouse – 33 weeks
  10. Medusa / Annie Lennox – 31 weeks

Capping the Top Ten: Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia holds at No.9 (25,000 – down 16 percent) and Cyndi Lauper falls 7-10 with True Colors (23,000 – down 45 percent).

Industry: Music sales declined by 3.9% this week, totalling 961,000 units across all albums sold.

Onto Next Week: Alanis Morissette and Beyonce could both enter the Top Ten with new records next week. Morissette’s Such Pretty Forks in the Road may open with over 80,000 units, while Beyonce’s re-release of The Lion King: The Gift is looking to move in the region of 50,000 units. Both figures will likely be enough to send each album into the Top Five straight out of the gate.

Important Moves in the Top 50

No.14 – Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass / Lana Del Rey’s first spoken word album Violet debuts at No.14 with first week sales of 16,000 copies. The audio poetry collection is the first spoken word album to chart on L.dK Weekly, and marks Del Rey’s seventh Top 20 hit!

No.23 – Medusa / Annie Lennox’s sophomore solo record from 1995 had big shoes to fill upon its retrospective release in July 2019, following in the footsteps of Diva (1992) which at the time, had hit No.1 on L.dK, finished at No.11 on 2018’s Year-End List, and been certified 3 x Platinum for over 900,000 copies sold. Medusa did not disappoint: it sold almost 200,000 copies in its first week on sale – higher than Diva – and spent its first three weeks at No.1 on the tally – also outperforming its predecessor. To date, both albums have been certified 5 x Platinum, with Diva having sold 1.75 million and Medusa not too far behind of 1.61 million units. This week, Medusa celebrates an entire year on L.dK Weekly as it slips 21-23 with 9,000 units sold: Diva meanwhile bounces 25-20 (10,000) in its 78th charting week.

27.07.2020 – L.dK Weekly

ELLIE GOULDING’S BRIGHTEST BLUE STARTS AT NO.1!

Note: This chart reflects my own personal music consumption. 1 song played = 1,000 units.

Plus: Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! goes Diamond!

Ellie Goulding starts at No.1 with her latest album Brightest Blue, with hefty first week sales of 168,000 copies.

Blue is the 54th album to hit No.1 on L.dK Weekly, and the 13th to top the chart this year.

168,000 units marks the fourth biggest debut of 2020 to date. Blue trails the opening weeks of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica (473,000), Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia (289,000) and The Weeknd’s After Hours (249,000).

Blue is Goulding’s first No.1 album, after she previously hit No.13 with 2015’s Delirium back in 2017.

Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection ranks at its No.2 peak for a third non-consecutive week shifting 84,000 copies (up 2 percent). Last week’s No.1, Chromatica dives to No.3, as sales drop by 21 percent to 78,000 sold.

Alanis Morissette’s No.2 smash The Collection moves back up 5-4 (67,000 – up 13 percent) and Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor slides 3-5 (62,000 – down 8 percent).

Jessie Ware goes Platinum this week as What’s Your Pleasure? moves another 48,000 units (down 20 percent) – it drops 4-6 and brings its total sales figure to 308,000! Pleasure is Ware’s third record to be certified Platinum following 2014’s Tough Love & 2017’s Glasshouse – the latter album has been certified 4 x Platinum for sales exceeding 1.2 million units.

Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors slips 6-7 (42,000 – down 8 percent); Chloe x Halle hold at No.8 with Ungodly Hour (35,000 – up 6 percent); Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia falls 7-9 (30,000 – down 14 percent).

Del Rey goes Diamond: Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! steps down 9-10 (29,000 – up 3 percent), and celebrates a historic week.

The album is just the second in history to cross the 3 million sales mark and be certified Diamond – it joins Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born which has moved 3.16 million to date. The five bestselling albums of all time are as follows:

  1. A Star is Born – Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper (3.16 million)
  2. Norman Fucking Rockwell! – Lana Del Rey (3.00 million)
  3. Lust for Life – Lana Del Rey (2.48 million)
  4. Love + Fear – MARINA (1.84 million)
  5. Diva – Annie Lennox (1.74 million)

Rockwell! also ties Stevie Nicks’ Bella Donna as the longest-running Top Ten album of all time. Both LP’s have spent a total of 46 weeks in the top tier. The five longest-running Top Ten albums are as follows:

  1. Bella Donna / Stevie Nicks – 46 weeks
  2. Norman Fucking Rockwell! / Lana Del Rey – 46 weeks
  3. Rumours / Fleetwood Mac- 45 weeks
  4. A Star is Born / Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – 42 weeks
  5. Lust for Life / Lana Del Rey – 39 weeks

Industry Sales: Combined music sales saw a 13.7% rise this week, with all activity totalling to exactly 1,000,000 units.

Onto Next Week: Taylor Swift’s surprise new album Folklore should earn a No.1 debut, perhaps with 150,000-175,000 units.

Important Moves in the Top 50

No.28 – Cher / Cher’s 1987 self-titled album debuted and peaked at No.6 in May, and this week it ascends 32-28 with 8,000 units sold. The LP has now been certified Gold for selling over 100,000 copies.
