ADELE’S 30 SELLS 1 MILLION COPIES IN RECORD TIME!

Adele scores third week atop Weekly Top 50; Taylor Swift’s evermore goes Diamond; Tracy Chapman debuts at No.4.

For a third successive week, Adele’s 30 triumphs as the most popular album of the moment. The LP debuted at the top spot two weeks ago, selling 650,000 in seven days to become the fastest-selling album of all time.

After selling 206,000 in its second frame, 30 declines by another 18.5%, selling 168,000 copies in its third week on sale. To date, 30 has sold 1,024,000 units!

1 Million In Record Time: By selling more than 1 million units in just three weeks, 30 becomes the fastest album ever to reach the milestone. It topples the previous record held by Lady Gaga’s Chromatica which needed five weeks to sell as many copies.

30 is Adele’s second album to sell a million copies, and to be certified Triple Platinum for sales of over 900,000 copies; it joins 25 which has been certified 6 x Platinum and sold just over 1.9 million units. The latter album repeats at No.6 this week selling 26,000 units (down fourteen percent).

To date, 30 is the seventh album to sell more than 1 million copies during 2021. It joins Taylor Swift’s evermore & folklore; Lana Del Rey’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club & Norman Fucking Rockwell!; Joni Mitchell’s Blue; and Miley Cyrus’s Plastic Hearts. By comparison, 2020 saw eight albums sell more than a million units, while 2019 produced six such hits!

Updated Accolades:

  • 7th bestselling album of 2021
  • 22nd bestselling album of the decade
  • 43rd bestselling album of all time

With total sales of 217,000 units across her catalogue, Adele ranks as the week’s most popular artist once again!

Lana Del Rey’s Blue Banisters keeps at No.2 with sales of 55,000 copies, down ten percent from the previous week. Del Rey’s 2019 juggernaut Norman Fucking Rockwell! meanwhile maintains its rank of No.10 (21,000 units – up five percent) as it logs a record-extending 110th week in the Top Ten!

Taylor Swift stays at No.3 with former-number-one Red (Taylor’s Version) selling 48,000 units (down ten percent).

Swift’s evermore retreats 4-5 with sales of 36,000 units (down ten percent) as it celebrates a historic week. Firstly, the album completes a full year on L.dK Weekly, dating to its No.1 debut in December 2020. evermore has never left the Top Ten. It is also the singer’s third album to spend more than a year on the charts:

  • Seventy-two weeks – folklore
  • Fifty-seven weeks – Lover
  • Fifty-two weeks – evermore

To date, the wintery-folk set has shifted a whopping 3,022,000 units, becoming only the fourth album ever released to be certified Diamond! It joins an exclusive club, populated by Del Rey’s NFR!, Swift’s own folklore and Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born – OST.

With folklore (4.1 million) and evermore (3.0 million), Swift is the only artist to boast multiple Diamond-certified hits. Lana Del Rey may join her over the next year, as 2017’s Lust for Life has sold 2.89 million so far.

evermore needed just fifty-two weeks to earn its Diamond certification, racing ahead of Gaga & Cooper’s Star which took sixty-three weeks to sell as many copies. It falls just short of NFR!‘s forty-seven weeks, while all albums trail Swift’s own folklore which achieved Diamond status after just thirty-four weeks!

  • Thirty-four weeks – folklore
  • Forty-seven weeks – Norman Fucking Rockwell!
  • Fifty-two weeks – evermore
  • Sixty-three weeks – A Star is Born – OST

With only four albums having been certified Diamond for selling over three million copies, Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia: Moonlight Edition seems primed to become the fifth before the end of the year, having sold 2.98 million units to date. It would achieve the distinction in its eighty-ninth week on sale.

folklore – Swift’s biggest smash, and one of the biggest albums in history – drops to No.12 on this week’s chart update, marking the first occassion where the album has ranked outside the Top Ten. It departs the region after seventy-one consecutive weeks, dating to its No.1 debut in August 2020.

American signer-songwriter Tracy Chapman flies onto the Weekly Top 50 at No.4 with her self-titled debut album (1988) – the LP opens with sales of 42,000 copies.

Three of the biggest & most enduring hits of 2021 round out the Top Ten: Joni Mitchell’s Blue holds at No.7 (24,000 units – down eight percent); Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia: Moonlight Edition is a non-mover at No.8 (22,000 units – even with last week); and Katie Melua’s Album No. 8 tumbles 5-9 (22,000 units – down thirty percent).
