TAYLOR SWIFT’S FOLKLORE CELEBRATES A MONTH AT NO.1, BOOSTED BY DELUXE RELEASE!

PLUS: Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia is back in the Top Ten!

Tightening her grip on the No.1 spot this week, Taylor Swift earns a fourth term at the summit with folklore. Boosted by the release of a deluxe edition on August 18th, containing new track “the lakes”, folklore moved 134,000 units in the week – up 7 percent against the previous week.

The LP records its greatest sales week to date (aside from its debut week in which it sold 259,000 copies), beating out its second week sales of 131,000 units.

folklore also goes 2 x Platinum just four weeks into its life, having moved 642,000 copies to date. It is Swift’s third album to be certified Multi-Platinum following reputation (2 x Platinum) and Lover (5 x Platinum).

Carole King’s A Beautiful Collection rebounds 3-2 for a fifth week at its peak (51,000 – on par) and crosses the 600,000 sales mark, going 2 x Platinum alongside the afformentioned folklore.

Falling from No.2 to No.3 after a record-extending nine aggregate weeks in second place: Alanis Morissette’s The Collection on sales of 48,000 units (down 7 percent). Lana Del Rey’s spoken word album Violet Bent Backwards over the Grass is steady at its No.4 high (44,000 – down 6 percent) as it goes Gold in its fourth week (100,000 sold).

Lady Gaga’s Chromatica holds steady at No.5 once again shifting 30,000 copies (down 19 percent) as it logs a 12th week inside the Top Five. This week Chromatica becomes just the 13th album to attain 5 x Platinum status on L.dK Weekly – denoting total sales exceeding 1.5 million units.

Even more impressive, is that Chromatica is not Gaga’s first album to cross the 1.5 million mark! Her and Bradley Cooper have sold 3.2 million copies of A Star is Born, making it the bestselling album of all time. Only two other artists can boast two albums in this exclusive club, and are now joined by Gaga:

  • Lana Del Rey – Norman Fucking Rockwell (3.1 million), Lust for Life (2.4 million)
  • Annie Lennox – Diva (1.7 million), Medusa (1.6 million)
  • Lady Gaga – A Star is Born* (3.2 million), Chromatica (1.5 million)

Ellie Goulding’s Brightest Blue sticks at No.6 (29,000 – down 12 percent) and goes Platinum in its fifth week. Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia rockets 14-7, earning 29,000 copies (up 81 percent) following the release of the remix of “Levitating” featuring Madonna and Missy Elliot.

Rounding out the Top Ten: Hayley Williams’ Petals for Armor steps down 7-8 after hitting No.3 (27,000 – down 10 percent), Lana Del Rey’s 17-week No.1 smash Norman Fucking Rockwell! repeats at No.9 (23,000 – down 11 percent) and Alanis Morissette’s Such Pretty Forks in the Road holds at No.10 (18,000 – down 28 percent) following its No.2 debut two weeks ago.

Music Industry: Total music sales took a small hit this week, dipping by roughly 1.1% to 736,000 sold. The industry’s total consumption figure for 2020 to date has now surpassed the entire of 2019, with 26.5 million units versus 26.1 million.

Onto Next Week: Troye Sivan’s 6-track In A Dream EP could easily debut with upwards of 50,000 units, while Taylor Swift’s folklore will likely sell somewhere in the region of 110,000 copies.

Notable Moves in the Top 50

No.39 – Lover / Taylor Swift’s seventh studio album blasted to the top of L.dK Weekly upon its release in August 2019, selling more than 300,000 copies. While it only stayed a week at the top (it was dethroned in its second week by Lana Del Rey’s Norman Fucking Rockwell! which would hold the crown for the next fourteen weeks) the album lingered in the Top Ten for a hefty 28 weeks and sold more than 1.5 million copies! This week Lover reaches an entire year on L.dK Weekly, dropping 34-39 (5,000) in its 52nd turn on the chart. It is Swift’s first album to do so – her next longest-charting disc is reputation on 18 weeks.

No.48 – Dedicated / It’s a double whammy for Carly Rae Jepsen this week, as her 2019 hit Dedicated wraps a full 52 weeks on the chart (dipping 45-48 – 2,000) and becomes her first project to sell over 1 million copies. Dedicated spent two weeks at No.1 in 2019, and follow-up Dedicated Side B ruled for a week earlier this year (it currently sit as No.30).
